Kroos, Mueller in Germany squad

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Germany coach Joachim Loew has included Bayer Leverkusens Toni Kroos and Bayern Munichs Thomas Mueller in the squad for next weeks friendly against Argentina.

Loew said Friday that the two young midfielders deserve a first chance with the national team following good performances in the Bundesliga over recent months. Leverkusen heads the table and Bayern is second.

The German football federation said Werder Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese is out of next Wednesdays match in Munich with an injury. Hamburg midfielder Marcell Jansen also is doubtful for the game.

The Argentina match will be Germanys last before its World Cup squad is named in May.

Ancelotti taunts old foe Mourinho

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Carlo Ancelotti has stoked the flames ahead of Chelseas clash with Inter Milan by claiming the whole of Italy want Jose Mourinho to lose.

The Blues travel to the San Siro for Wednesday nights Champions League clash with tensions having resurfaced between Ancelotti and Mourinho.

The pair endured a strained relationship during their time at the Milanese rivals and former AC boss Ancelottis taunts will add further fuel to the fire.

He told Italian newspaper Il Giornale that thanks to Mourinhos behaviour the whole of Italy, Inter fans excluded, will be supporting Chelsea.

Ancelotti also hit out at Mourinho for dismissing the achievements of his successors at Chelsea following his departure from Stamford Bridge.

Its true that after him (Mourinho) nobody has won anything for Chelsea, although some bloke called Grant didnt do so bad and came close with the Champions League final, added Ancelotti.

He is good at charging up the atmosphere and the team, but its ground I would never go on.

Anderson pondering United future

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Manchester United midfielder Anderson has admitted he is considering his future at Old Trafford after falling out of the first-team picture.

Andersons long-term future at United has been the subject of speculation for the last few weeks after a reported bust-up with Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 21-year-old has not featured for the first-team since the Carling Cup defeat to Manchester City on 19 January and he is thought to have infuriated Ferguson by skipping training to return to his native Brazil.

Anderson admits he went to Brazil to consider his future as he fears his lack of regular action at United will jeopardise his chances of making his countrys World Cup squad.

The conversations with Ferguson are private but I have explained my situation, said Anderson.

I went to Brazil to think about my future and not to negotiate with other clubs.

One of my dreams this season is to make the Brazil squad for the World Cup but the fact is that if I do not play for United then the national coach Dunga is not going to be interested in me.

This is very hard for me because I need minutes on the field during the coming matches. I always had a good relation with Ferguson. He has asked me for more effort and I accept that, but I need more chances to play in the first team.

The former Porto man concedes he has yet to produce his best for United since his arrival at the club in the summer of 2007

I have won titles in Manchester but still the people have not seen my real performance on the field, added Anderson. I am not a machine. It is impossible to function 100% in each match and I accept that I have not played well during some matches but those were not significant enough to stop me playing for a long time.

The tough-tackling midfielder, who was left out of the squad for last weeks Champions League trip to AC Milan, insists he would be happy to stay at United if he is afforded more first-team opportunities.

The decision not to ask me to travel to Milan was down to the coach, noted Anderson. I just hope I have more luck and can play in the return game.

I am a professional footballer and my responsibility is to United. Am I happy? I would say I am optimistic. If I play more games then I will be happy. But that is normal.

Some European clubs have asked about me but, as far as I am concerned, my future is still with United.

I am not finished here and Im convinced that I can offer much to this team in the decisive moments of the season.

Carlos Tevez to return to England in time for Chelsea match

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Carlos Tevez hopes to return to England in time for this weekends match against Chelsea.

The Manchester City striker has missed the clubs past three games after returning to Buenos Aires in the wake of the premature birth of his second daughter.

Yesterday, Roberto Mancini conceded that the Argentina strikers continued absence was becoming a big problem for his team and the Manchester City manager is planning for the FA Cup fifth-round replay away to Stoke City on Wednesday without Tevez.

Kia Joorabchian, Tevezs adviser, said he believes the player, who has scored 19 goals in all competitions this season, will be fit for the match at Stamford Bridge and denied claims that Mancini did not know where his client was.

He hopes to be back for the Chelsea game, Joorabchian said. Hes having to go through a very difficult period but hes dealt with them before and will continue to do so.

Tevezs wife, Vanesa, is now out of hospital, although the couples child is still in intensive care. The signs are very positive in terms of his daughters recovery, Joorabchian said. He Tevez was determined to get back for the Liverpool game but unfortunately the situation didnt get much better. However, she has got better over the weekend.

Joorabchian insists the information should not be news to City: He Tevez has been keeping the club informed on a daily basis - including the manager. They have exchanged messages once or twice. Hes training daily with the national team of Argentina out there. He is a professional. He understands that side of it.

Kris Boyd and Lee McCulloch recalled to Scotland squad

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Craig Levein has included Kris Boyd and Lee McCulloch in his first Scotland squad since taking over as manager.

The Rangers pair will return to the international fold in the friendly against the Czech Republic at Hampden Park on March 3 after refusing to be considered for the national team under previous manager Craig Burley.

Boyd, who has scored seven times in 15 appearances for Scotland, has found the net in his past three games for Rangers and along with McCulloch has been instrumental in helping the club to open up a seven point lead at the top of the Scottish Premier League.

There is no place for goalkeeper Allan McGregor, who misses out on the 24-man squad after an injury sustained during a late-night incident in Glasgow city centre raised doubts over the Rangers goalkeepers fitness for Sundays Old Firm derby.

The 28-year-old has not played for his country for almost a year due to his involvement in the Boozegate affair, which saw a number of Scotland players disciplined after they stayed up drinking in the team hotel until 4am after a 3-0 defeat by Holland. McGregor and Barry Ferguson were later suspended from playing for the national side after making rude gestures at television cameras from the Scotland substitutes bench.

Levein looked set to end McGregors international exile, however, the Scotland manager has been told by Walter Smith that the injuries McGregor sustained in the incident mean he will not be fit.

Im looking for certainty, Levein said. It doesnt look like hes going to be fit its nice and simple. Once this game is out of the way, he will be considered for the next match.

Barca set to welcome back quartet

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Barcelonas defensive crisis has eased ahead of Saturdays La Liga visit of Racing Santander as Pep Guardiola welcomes back four key players.

Barca were down to the bare bones last weekend, with Gerard Pique, Rafa Marquez, Dani Alves, Eric Abidal, Dmitro Chygrynskiy and Yaya Toure all out.

And the Catalans paid the price for those absences as they went down 2-1 at Atletico Madrid in what was their first league defeat of the campaign.

While injuries to midfielders Xavi and Seydou Keita represent a blow to Guardiolas plans for the match against Racing, the news regarding his defence is much brighter.

Pique and Marquez are both available again after suspension, while Chygrynskiy and Toure have recovered from injury and will be fit to face the Cantabrian outfit.

The return of those four players gives Guardiola many more options ahead of Saturdays game.

With Alves still sidelined, the Barca coach is likely to shift captain Carles Puyol to the right-back position, with Pique set to return in the centre of defence.

Toure could start in the defensive midfield role, although Guardiola may prefer to reserve the Ivory Coast man for next weeks Champions League last-16 tie against Stuttgart.

That scenario could see Marquez start in the role he occupied successfully in the 2004-05 campaign, when Barca claimed the title for the first time in six years.

But Guardiola admits he is concerned by the clubs growing list of casualties.

If so many players are injured, something is wrong - there are several causes, although we dont know exactly whats wrong, he said.

Meanwhile, Guardiola reiterated his faith in out-of-favour forward Thierry Henry, who has not featured in recent matches.

He is one of the most important players in the squad, he said.

Few people have as much faith in Henry as I do, but we have 20-odd players and I choose the team as I best see fit in each moment, he said.

And he added: I am still behind Henry, but I cannot be answering (questions) about the eight players that dont play each week.

Barca could only draw at home to Racing last season in what was Guardiolas second game in charge of the first-team.

Saturdays match is already his 100th competitive encounter as coach of Catalonias finest.

When I took over, I never thought about how many games I would be here, but last year we played all the matches in the world, so its normal to arrive so quickly to 100, he said.

Lets see how many more I get to.

Barcas defeat at Atletico last weekend saw the Catalans lead over fierce rivals Real Madrid cut to just two points after 22 rounds of the championship.

Guardiolas side are expected to return to winning ways against a weakened Racing outfit, but the Barca coach highlighted the Cantabrians positive away form.

Since (Miguel Angel) Portugal took over, they have won three away games and drawn another - they dont sit back and defend, but come and attack you, he said.

Racing have indeed improved greatly since Portugals return as coach, but the Cantabrians went down 3-0 at home to Malaga last weekend.

That match was something of a cup hangover, following Racings semi-final exit from the Copa del Rey at the hands of Atletico Madrid just days earlier.

The Cantabrians start the weekend five points clear of the relegation zone, but will be without three key players at the Nou Camp.

Pedro Munitis, Gonzalo Colsa and Mohamed Tchite are suspended after all three players picked up late bookings in the defeat against Malaga.

Even without those three, though, full-back Christian Fernandez believes Racing have a chance.

Barca arent at their most brilliant at the moment, so we have a chance, he said.

And the defender believes halting Lionel Messi could be the key to his sides success.

He is very unpredictable, with tremendous quality and speed - you have to be alert all the time to stop him, he said.

Christian is recovering from a knock and, if fit, is likely to have the task of marking the Argentina winger.

I will try to make him uncomfortable, he said.

Arbeloa orders Real to regain focus

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Real Madrid have little time to dwell on their Champions League defeat against Lyon as they prepare to host Villarreal on Sunday night.

An off-colour Madrid lost the away leg of their last-16 clash 1-0 and they will need to produce a much better performance in the return meeting if they are to avoid tumbling out of the tournament at the same stage for the sixth successive season.

That match is not until next month though, and in the meantime Madrid will need to concentrate their efforts on the league and try to make the most of the problems leaders Barcelona are experiencing.

The first challenge is a clash with coach Manuel Pellegrinis former club Villarreal, which is arguably the biggest test Madrid have had so far at home in La Liga - where they have won 11 out of 11 and kept eight clean sheets.

It will not be Madrids final test at the Bernabeu though, and their upcoming home matches are likely to determine whether Cristiano Ronaldo and Co will be celebrating any silverware this season.

After the visit of Villarreal come successive league clashes with Sevilla, Sporting Gijon, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia.

They also have the second leg of their European tie with Lyon during that spell, whilst knowing that if they go all the way to the Champions League final then they will play another key home match as the Bernabeu is the host venue.

Madrid therefore have plenty to play for over the coming months, and as such defender Alvaro Arbeloa insists they have to put the Lyon setback behind them.

There are three weeks before we play the second leg, so we cant forget that we are also playing for La Liga, he said.

The Villarreal match is very important. They are a team that are improving all the time. We need to get our game back on track.

Madrid received a huge boost in the title race last weekend when local rivals Atletico become the first team to beat leaders Barca in the league this season.

That helped reduce the gap between the top two to two points, and Barca will be eager to bounce back against Racing Santander at the Nou Camp on Saturday evening.

Coach Pep Guardiola continues to have a selection headache, though. Last weekend he was without six defensive players through injury and suspension, and this weekend it is the midfield thats the main concern with Xavi, Seydou Keita and possibly Yaya Toure all missing.

Sergio Busquets admits the loss of Xavi is a big blow, saying: Xavi is a very important player. He sets the rhythm of the match. Hes the heart of this Barca team, but lets hope we dont miss him too much.

Aside from Barcas game there are two other matches on Saturday, with Deportivo La Coruna hosting bottom club Xerez - who are now 10 points from safety - and Sevilla going to Real Mallorca in the late kick-off.

Mallorca, who surrendered fourth spot to Sevilla during the last round of matches, will be pleased to be back at home after going down 1-0 to relegation-threatened Tenerife on Monday. Mallorca, like Madrid, boast a 100% record at home.

There are five other matches on Sunday aside from the big showdown at the Bernabeu, with Malaga hosting Espanyol, Sporting going to improving Real Zaragoza, Almeria meeting Atletico, Osasuna hosting second-bottom Real Valladolid and Athletic Bilbao taking on Tenerife.

Tenerife, who have the worst away record in the division with just two points from 10 games, won their first match in over two months with their triumph over fellow islanders Mallorca.

The remaining match is the Monday night fixture between third-placed Valencia and Getafe.

Fabianski errors cost Arsenal in Porto

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Radamel Falcao scored the second-half winner as FC Porto beat Arsenal 2-1 Wednesday in the first leg of their last-16 match in the Champions League.

Falcao pounced in the 51st minute, scoring following a quick free kick inside the penalty area after Arsenal defender Sol Campbell had made a backpass to goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who picked the ball up. It was the Colombians fourth goal in seven Champions League games this season.

The home team took the lead in the 11th minute when stand-in goalie Fabianski, who had strayed too far off his line, dived backwards to bundle a low cross by Silvestre Varela into the net.

Campbell, making his first appearance in Europe in four years since his return to Arsenal, equalized with a header seven minutes later.

Campbell, unmarked, found the roof of the net from short range to score what could be an important away goal. The return leg in London is on March 9.

This result is good for Arsenal because they scored away from home, Porto coach Jesualdo Ferreira said. Were good enough to fight for a result (in London). Well just have to see what injuries we have to deal with by then.

Porto, a two-time European champion, has made it through to the last 16 for the sixth time in seven seasons while Arsenal was looking for its first win at Portos Stadium of the Dragon.

Porto took the early initiative against the Gunners, who were without five first-team regulars including goalkeeper Manuel Almunia and Russia forward Andrey Arshavin.

The Arsenal backline looked shaky when Falcao and Brazilian forward Hulk bore down.

Campbell, especially, was short of pace. The 35-year-old former England international, who has featured only twice since returning to the club he once captained, was drafted in as a replacement for injured defender William Gallas.

Denilson and Tomas Rosicky occasionally sparkled when Arsenal went forward, and Nicklas Bendtner tested Porto goalie Helton with a looping header just before halftime.

Zaccheroni expecting improvement

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

After a first win in three games since taking over as coach of Juventus, Alberto Zaccheroni is expecting further improvement when his side travels to Bologna on Sunday.

Juventus beat Genoa 3-2 last time out with club captain Alessandro Del Piero scoring a brace after Amauri headed Juventus first. It was a controversial win though. Genoa claimed that Sokratis Papastathopoulos foul on Del Piero that led to the winning penalty took place outside the area.

We arent starting right and we are not concentrating in defense Zaccheroni said. It is one of many problems that we need to resolve.

Zaccheroni only took over from Ciro Ferrara after Juventus was eliminated from the Italian Cup in late January, but by then the teams confidence had been badly hit by defeats at home to AC Milan and AS Roma.

Midfielder Diego has come in for particular criticism after he lost his early season form, but Zaccheroni feels the entire team needs to show its true capabilities.

Hes not at his best, as the others arent, Zaccheroni said. Here we have players who have won a lot, including world champions. But these guys are always under pressure and everyone has an opinion on their mistakes. My job is to make them play their best every game.

Roma in second place meets Catania at home, with the aim of doing what it can to close the seven point gap to league leader Inter Milan.

In the last round of games Claudio Ranieris side beat Palermo 4-1 at home to take its unbeaten run in the league to 14 matches.

We have a month and then well see (what happens), defender Juan said. Inter is a great team and Mourinho is a great coach, but everyone has its weak spots. Regardless we have to win because AC Milan and Napoli are close behind.

It is difficult to say (what will happen), Juan said. Inters matches against Sampdoria, Genoa and Palermo wont be easy, but that said we have to play Milan and Napoli.

Inter plays host to Sampdoria and welcomes midfielder Dejan Stankovic back to the squad after more than a month out with a calf injury.

Sampdorias confidence will be high after a 2-0 win over Fiorentina last time out put it behind Napoli in fourth place on goal difference.

We are taking it day by day, Sampdoria coach Luigi Del Neri said. We didnt aim for the Champions League at the start of the season as that would have put too much pressure on us. Now we have our best players back, but we dont want to look too far ahead.

Also Sunday, it is; Genoa vs. Udinese; Atalanta vs. Chievo Verona; Cagliari vs. Parma; Fiorentina vs. Livorno; Palermo vs. Lazio; Siena vs. Napoli; Bari vs. AC Milan.
