Celtic defender Kennedy retires injured at 26

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Celtic defender John Kennedy has retired from football at the age of 26 because of his failure to recover from a knee injury.

Kennedy was Celtics joint longest serving player but made just 45 appearances in his 10 years at the club.

He damaged knee ligaments in his only appearance for Scotland in March 2004 and did not play for three years. He returned to the team in April 2007 but hurt the same knee in a Champions League match seven months later.

Kennedy played 16 times on loan at English club Norwich last season but has now quit on medical advice.

Celtic manager Tony Mowbray says Kennedy had all the qualities required to become such a wonderful player.

England midfielder Frank Lampard will be out for three weeks because of a torn muscle in his left thigh.

The Chelsea player was hurt while training Thursday and pulled out of Saturdays friendly against Brazil in Doha.

Lampard will likely miss Premier League matches against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Arsenal and Manchester City, as well as a Champions League meeting with FC Porto and Chelseas League Cup quarterfinal against Blackburn.

Lampard has scored six goals in 18 games this season for the Premier League leaders.

Russia out to attack Slovenia in World Cup playoff

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Russia coach Guus Hiddink will put his team on the attack against Slovenia on Saturday in the first leg of its World Cup playoffs.

Russia, surprise semifinalist at last years European Championship, won seven of its 10 qualifying matches but finished behind Germany in Group 4.

Defense was the teams strongest department in qualifying - the Russians conceded only six goals - but Hiddink is putting the onus on his strikers ahead of the first match of the two-leg playoff at Luzhniki Stadium.

We will go for an attacking style of play, the Dutchman said. (But) we are not in a position to expect an easy outing.

If you take a look at Slovenias results in its group qualifiers and in friendly matches, you will see that its a very serious, well-organized and tactically skilled team, Hiddink added. You can see it by the number of goals they have conceded, which were few.

Slovenia won its last four qualifiers, scoring 13 goals and conceding none.

There is not the slightest hint in the Russia team of underestimating Slovenia, Hiddink said. We all understand that these will not be easy matches - the stakes are too high.

We will try to maintain our sometimes risky style to play and create chances - which we always do, but it will also be important in these two games not concede damage.

Hiddink said he expects no major changes in the opponents lineup and tactics for the match.

Slovenia boasts few star names in its team but has at times impressed since losing all three games in its World Cup debut in 2002.

It qualified for the playoffs from a pool that saw neighbor Slovakia progress automatically.

Slovenia coach Matjaz Kek claimed his team - which lies 37 positions below 12th-ranked Russia - is the underdog.

Do you know whos a favorite for this playoff? Kek said. I do. Its Russia. But no one can deprive us of our desire to win it. We have our own goal in this match - to get an active result for the return leg.

Slovenia striker Zlatko Dedic added: We are going to play our game and we are not afraid. Yes, Russia is the favorite but we hope that in 90 minutes we will have our chances to score.

We fully realize the strength and quality of the Russian team, Kek said. It will be a tough game for us. But I hope that our defense will prove its depth.

Slovenia defender Matej Mavric was doubtful for the game because of pain in his back, while Russia left back Yury Zhirkov is reportedly struggling with knee pains after training on Luzhnikis artificial field.

With striker Roman Pavlyuchenko rarely starting at Tottenham, Hiddink has recalled Lokomotiv Moscows Dmitry Sychev for Saturdays match.

Sychev, who was last called up in the spring, is in good form after scoring the winner in Lokomotivs 1-0 win over Amkar on Sunday in the Russian league.

Moscow officials will place face masks on each of the stadiums 80,000 seats for the game, fearing the further spread of swine flu.

Russia failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, but has improved since then under Hiddink.

Hiddink has the Russians playing with both grit and style. Slick team movement has given Arsenal forward Andrei Arshavin plenty of options for his accurate passes and layoffs, while defending in numbers has made scoring against Russia a difficult task.

The return leg is in Maribor, Slovenia, on Wednesday.

Goalkeeper Robert Enkes funeral set for Sunday

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Germany goalkeeper Robert Enke will be buried in a small ceremony near his home Sunday following a stadium memorial service for the player whose suicide has shaken the country.

The entire national team will attend the service, the German soccer federation said, and will be joined by former coaches Juergen Klinsmann and Rudi Voeller, along with other players. Enke, who played for Hannover, will be buried near Neustadt, outside Hannover, the team said.

The 32-year-old goalie took his own life Tuesday evening when he stepped in front of a train near his Hannover home. His wife, Teresa, went on national television a day later to say her husband had been suffering from depression for six years but did not want it known.

It was a free decision by Mrs. Enke. I think she wanted to make the public aware of this subject, Hannover club president Martin Kind said. We must learn how to open ourselves.

Kind spoke after attending a religious service Wednesday evening with Teresa Enke, some Hannover players, Germany coach Joachim Loew, national team captain Michael Ballack, soccer federation president Theo Zwanziger and hundreds of Hannover citizens. Later, about 35,000 people took part in a silent march to citys stadium.

In a country riveted by soccer, Enkes death has prompted a debate about whether players receive sufficient psychological support.

The tragedy of Robert Enke gives us cause to think about certain things that are usual and taken for granted in football, said Hannover general manager Joerg Schmadtke, a former goalkeeper. We have to discuss the care of these young people.

Teresa Enke said her husband had kept his depression secret from the public because had had been afraid the couples adopted 8-month-old daughter would be taken away from then if his illness were known. The couples biological daughter died of a heart ailment when she was 2 in 2006.

In a suicide note, Enke apologized to his family and the staff treating him for deliberately misleading them into believing he was better, which was necessary in order to carry out the suicide plans, said Valentin Markser, the doctor who treated him.

Enkes ailment was not known to his teammates or coaches.

Robert played a perfect role, he misled the public perfectly, Schmadtke said. By doing that he took away the possibility for us to help him.

Enkes longtime goalkeeping coach, Joerg Sievers, said depression was a taboo subject in soccer.

Depression is surely seen in some places as a weakness, Sievers said.

The union of professional soccer players urged more psychological support for players. Some Bundesliga clubs already employ full-time psychologists, as does the national team.

Enke had a good chance of being Germanys starting goalkeeper at next years World Cup in South Africa. He is the second Germany player known to have suffered from depression. Bayern Munich midfielder Sebastian Deisler quit soccer in January 2007 after several bouts of depression and five knee operations.

The German soccer federation canceled an exhibition game scheduled for Saturday in Cologne against Chile. After attending the service Sunday, the team will gather in Duesseldorf to prepare for Wednesdays exhibition against Ivory Coast.

Goalkeeper Cudicini breaks wrists in road accident

Tottenham goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini was hospitalized with fractured wrists and a damaged pelvis on Thursday after he was involved in a motorcycle accident.

Spurs did not immediately announce details of the accident but said the 36-year-old Italian, who moved to the club from Chelsea last season, was undergoing scans under the supervision of club medical staff.

The Metropolitan Police said Cudicinis BMW motorcycle was in a collision with a car and that the goalkeeper had injuries which were possibly life-changing. Neither the female driver or a child in the car needed treatment, the police said.

Cudicini has been backing up Heurelho Gomes at Tottenham this season, but the Italians contract is up at the end of this season and he has been looking for a new deal.

France names its 12 venues for Euro 2016 bid

France has named the 12 venues it hopes will be able to host the 2016 European Championship.

The French football federation said Wednesday that stadiums in Bordeaux, Lens, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Nancy, Nice, Paris, Saint-Denis, Saint-Etienne, Strasbourg and Toulouse could all be used if France hosts Euro 2016.

Matches would be played at nine venues, while the three others would be backups.

France must hand in its candidature in February, with UEFA announcing the winner next May. Other single bids have been received from Italy and Turkey, while Sweden and Norway are making a joint bid.

France won the European Championship when it last hosted the tournament in 1984, with the final at Parc des Princes in Paris.

Chelsea defender Jose Bosingwa out for 3 months

Chelsea defender Jose Bosingwa has had knee surgery and will be out of action for about three months.

Bosingwa is the second Chelsea defender with a serious injury. Left back Ashley Cole has a depressed fracture of the tibia, although he will not require surgery.

Chelsea said Wednesday on its Web site that Bosingwa underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee this week. His recovery time will be approximately three months.

The Portugal right back and Cole have played a key role in Chelseas success this season, adding attacking options and helping the London club concede the fewest goals in the Premier League with eight in 12 games.
