Owens injury-time goal clinches win over City

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Michael Owen struck six minutes into injury time to give Manchester United a 4-3 victory over Manchester City on Sunday, halting the crosstown rivals perfect start to the Premier League season.

United had thrown away the lead three times after blunders at the back - the last coming when Rio Ferdinand gifted the ball to Craig Bellamy for his second goal of the game in the 90th minute.

We made three horrendous mistakes, mistakes you dont even half associate with our team and it kept them in the game, United manager Alex Ferguson said. I am unhappy because it spoiled what could have been a really emphatic victory. We could have won by six or seven today. Its probably the greatest derby game ever.

While Wayne Rooney had got United off to the best possible start with a goal inside two minutes, goalkeeper Ben Foster committed the first calamity by allowing City striker Carlos Tevez, returning to Old Trafford following his offseason move from United, to set up Gareth Barrys equalizer.

Fletcher headed the Premier League champions briefly back in front at the start of the second half, but Tevez provided the ball for Bellamy to make it 2-2.

Bellamy was on target again after Fletcher nodded in another in the 80th minute, but Owen chose the perfect time to score his first goal for United and vindicate Fergusons gamble on the 29-year-old forward.

After four successive wins, it was the first time City had dropped points since $200 million was spent strengthening the squad over the offseason.

MADRID - Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice and Real Madrid trounced promoted Xerez 5-0 to continue the big-spending clubs perfect start to the Spanish league season.

Madrids last four goals at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium arrived in a late 13-minute spell, with substitute Jose Maria Gutierrez, Karim Benzema and Ruud van Nistelrooy also hitting the target.

Earlier, Fernando Llorente scored twice to help Athletic Bilbao beat Villarreal 3-2 and also maintain its winning start.

Other results were: Zaragoza 1, Valladolid 2; and Almeria 1, Getafe 0.

MILAN - Marco Padalino scored twice as Sampdoria beat Siena 4-1 to stay atop Serie A and ahead of Juventus on goal difference.

Angelo Palombo and Daniele Mannini scored in the first half and Padalino grabbed a pair in the second, with Michele Fini responding for the visitors. Sampdoria has a maximum 12 points from four games.

City rival Genoa lost its first game, 3-1 at Chievo, where Michele Marcolini, Erjon Bogdani and Sergio Pellissier found the net for the hosts.

Champion Inter meanwhile moved up to third on 10 points with a 2-1 victory at Cagliari. Diego Milito grabbed both goals after Jeda opened the scoring with a penalty, but coach Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands in the second half for taking his protests too far.

Also Sunday, it was: Bari 4, Atalanta 1; Catania 1, Lazio 1; AC Milan 1, Bologna 0; Parma 1, Palermo.

FRANKFURT - Hamburger SV and Bayer Leverkusen both drew to maintain a three-point lead atop the Bundesliga.

Hamburg, which is ahead on goal difference, drew 1-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt as both teams remained undefeated.

Leverkusen was held to a 0-0 draw at home by Werder Bremen.

In the third game Sunday, promoted Freiburg got two goals from Ivica Banovic to win 4-0 at Hertha Berlin. Hertha, which led the standings at one point last season and nearly qualified for the Champions League, lost its fifth straight and remains at bottom.

PARIS - Etienne Didot and Moussa Sissoko each scored in Toulouses 2-0 win over Le Mans 2-0 in the French league, while 10-man Lille earned a 1-1 draw at northern rival Lens with a last-gasp header from defender Adil Rami.

Later, Lyon looked to maintain its unbeaten start to the season at Paris Saint-Germain. A win would move Lyon even with Bordeaux at the top of the standings with 16 points after six rounds. Marseille has 14.

Sampdoria stays top with win, just ahead of Juve

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Marco Padalino came off the substitutes bench to score twice as Sampdoria beat Siena 4-1 on Sunday to stay top of Serie A and ahead of Juventus on goal difference.

Angelo Palombo and Daniele Mannini scored in the first half and Padalino grabbed a brace in the second, with Michele Fini responding for the visitors. Victory meant Sampdoria has a maximum 12 points from four games.

City rival Genoa was unable to keep up its 100 per cent record and slipped to a 3-1 loss at Chievo, for whom Michele Marcolini, Erjon Bogdani and Sergio Pellissier found the net.

Champion Inter meanwhile moved up to third on 10 points with a 2-1 victory at Cagliari. Diego Milito grabbed both goals after Jeda opened the scoring for the hosts with a penalty, but coach Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands in the second half for taking his protests too far.

After a slow start by Sampdoria, Palombo burst through the midfield and shot low from the edge of the area to give his side the lead in the 23rd.

The goal seemed to relax the hosts and Antonio Cassano began to exert his influence more. From his chip behind the defense, Mannini lifted the ball over Siena goalkeeper Gianluca Curci to double the lead.

Cassano was involved with the third when Curci parried his shot, but the ball ran into the path of Padalino and the Swiss midfielder, who had come on at the start of the second half, slotted home the rebound.

Fini gave Siena some hope in the 68th minute, when his shot from the edge of the area caught Sampdoria keeper Luca Castellazzi by surprise. But five minutes from time Padalino grabbed his second in similar fashion to his first, tapping in after Curci had blocked Giampiero Pazzinis effort.

Its a good start, these four games, Sampdoria coach Luigi Del Neri said. Were pleased, as the boys are showing what they can do.

They have a great mentality. Everyone helps out in defense and they get to show what they can do in attack. Weve had a bit of luck, which everyone knows you need. We play to win and we can improve.

Chievo began in determined fashion against Genoa and took the lead in the fifth minute, Marcolini slotting home a penalty after Giuseppe Biava had pulled down Bogdani.

Two minutes later Bogdani doubled the lead when he tapped in Lucianos cross at the far post after Genoa had been unable to clear the danger.

Genoa was given a lifeline in the 65th minute after Mario Yepes inexplicably handled Giuseppe Scullis cross and Sergio Floccari scored the penalty.

However, Chievo put the result beyond doubt in the 76th minute. Giampiero Pinzi crossed from the right and Pablo Granoche headed across goal for Pellissier to nod home unmarked at the far post.

In injury time Sculli was pulled down by Luciano in the box, but Stefano Sorrentino saved Floccaris spot kick.

Inter was made to work for its win after Jeda fired home a penalty in the 16th minute after Maicon had tripped Alessandro Matri.

I dont think we were at our best in the first half, goalkeeper Julio Cesar said. But at halftime the boss gave the team a lift and the side responded well in the second half.

The result is what we wanted; three points, three very important points and now the team has to move forward.

Mourinhos side needed Cagliari to make a mistake to allow them to equalize. Daniele Conti dithered on the ball and, when h was tackled by Samuel Etoo, Milito pounced on the loose ball and raced into the area to slot past Federico Marchetti.

Milito doubled his tally in the 56th minute. Dejan Stankovic hit a long ball over the defense and again the Argentine outpaced the defense to score.

Mourinhos sending off came after he protested that Davide Astori should have received a second yellow card for a foul on Inters Mario Balotelli midway through the second half.

The boss is disappointed to have been sent off, Inter sporting director Marco Branca said. But he felt he was right to protest.

AS Roma bounced back from losing its Europa League match to Basle in midweek with a 3-1 win over Fiorentina.

Captain Francesco Totti gave Claudio Ranieris side the lead from the penalty spot in the 27th minute after a handball by Alessandro Gamberini.

In the 29th, Totti thought he had grabbed his second, but it was ruled out for offside. Four minutes later though, he did double Romas tally.

Fiorentina was unable to clear David Pizarros corner and Totti slotted home the loose ball.

Four minutes from the break, Totti set up Daniele De Rossi for the third with a left wing cross that the midfielder headed powerfully past Fiorentina keeper Sebastien Frey.

With six minutes remaining, Alberto Gilardino scored a consolation goal for the visitors, his second of the season.

We needed to find our speed, especially with how we move the ball, De Rossi said. Weve lacked a bit of familiarity and I think in the first half we definitely found it. It is only the fourth game, we are only a few points behind the top teams.

Also Sunday, it was: Bari 4, Atalanta 1; Catania 1, Lazio 1; AC Milan 1, Bologna 0; Parma 1, Palermo.

Torres header clinches Liverpools win at West Ham

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Fernando Torres rode to Liverpools rescue with a late headed winner at West Ham as the visitors clung on to win 3-2 having twice conceded the lead in Saturdays English Premier League match.

The Spain striker made the decisive connection in the 75th minute with Ryan Babels cross for his second goal of a nervy match for the Reds, whose defensive frailties were badly exposed.

Torres had put Liverpool in front in the 20th, but it was soon canceled out by Alessandro Diamantis penalty. Dirk Kuyt restored Liverpools advantage then minutes later Carlton Cole struck on the stroke of halftime.

We showed character and have confidence, Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez said. It could have been better, especially when you talk about mistakes.

It was a difficult game but we did enough to win. We are improving and you can see the players have belief that we can continue winning.

Liverpool could not afford to drop even two points as two early losses have already rocked its bid for a first English championship triumph since 1990.

But the first scare came inside two minutes at Upton Park. West Ham forward Zavon Hines snatched the ball off center back Jamie Carragher after he dithered over Glen Johnsons pass. Hines beat Pepe Reina only to be denied by the post.

The threat persisted as did the shakiness in the visiting defense. A mix-up between Carragher and Steven Gerrard allowed Cole to race forward toward goal, but Martin Skrtel made a decisive intervention.

But it was the power and pace of Torres that ultimately beat the home side. After a stepover, Torres cut past James Tomkins and beat Robert Green at his near post for the opening goal.

West Ham was dealt a double setback in the space of a few minutes when Matthew Upson and Valon Behrami were both forced off due to injury.

But another Carragher calamity gave West Ham a route back into the game, shoving Hines over in the 28th to concede a penalty. If the decision was clearcut, the penalty itself wasnt.

Diamanti, who was recruited in August from Livorno, did put the ball in the net, but slipped and appeared to make two connections as he took the spotkick.

The Liverpool players protests went unheeded, but they were back in front four minutes before halftime.

It was very scary, manager Gianfranco Zola said. I think he slid, but he told me he wanted to do that. Its his new technique!

Gerrard connected with former Hammers midfielder Yossi Benayouns corner and Kuyt ensured the header crossed the line by sticking out a foot to make the faintest of touches at the far post.

It was going in anyway, Gerrard said. He scores enough goals, so I want it.

There was still time in the half for another costly defensive error from Liverpool.

As Mark Nobles corner was floated in from the left, Cole rose above Torres, Carragher and Gerrard and place a glancing header past Reina, once again raising doubts about the efficacy of Liverpools zonal marking.

In the second half, both teams appeared fatigued by the pace of the game and Benitez replaced goalscorer Kuyt with Ryan Babel.

And it was Babel who, after racing past Hines, delivered the cross that Torres, rising above two defenders, nodded past the diving Green to claim his 55th goal since joining Liverpool in 2007.

That 20.3 million pounds (then $40.6 million) paid to Atletico Madrid is looking like a bargain.

He was very cheap so we are very happy, Benitez said. He is a very good player, but the main thing for us, is that he keeps his mentality.

He is keen to learn and can improve. You saw his quality today. We have a very good player and hopefully he will get better in the future.

But almost immediately from the restart from the goal, the Reds were nearly pegged back for a third time. Reina first pushed away Kovacs header from Coles cross and the Spanish goalkeeper reacted quickly to prevent a follow-up from Hines.

For all of West Hams battling qualities, the team has collected just four points from its first five matches.

Ferguson rips into cocky Man City ahead of derby

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Even before Manchester Citys lavish spending spree has produced a trophy, it has claimed a first notable success: irritating Alex Ferguson.

The Manchester United manager has reacted with indignation to cocky Citys title aspirations, escalating tensions between the crosstown rivals ahead of Sundays derby.

While both teams have started the Premier League season with four wins, United has played an extra match, which it lost to newly promoted Burnley.

It is not only City splurging around $200 million in the offseason that vexed Ferguson, but the way the Abu Dhabi-owned neighbor flaunted its biggest coup.

United-defect Carlos Tevez was displayed on an advertising billboard over the northern citys main shopping street with the slogan Welcome to Manchester.

That stupid poster was arrogance, it was naughty and showed a cockiness that wasnt required at the time - the new season hadnt even started, Ferguson said Friday. Whatever else they are doing doesnt particularly worry me.

City counterpart Mark Hughes, a former striker for Ferguson, responded: The poster does seem to have really upset Sir Alex for some reason.

We just take it as a bit of flattery, though, because, for a number of years, City havent affected Uniteds thinking to any great extent. Possibly thats changed now.

Ferguson begs to differ ahead of the 152nd Manchester derby.

Liverpool has always been the derby. It is because of the history, the 67-year-old Scot said. My aim was always to do well against them. It is hard for me to think any other way.

City could be without its prized striker at Old Trafford on Sunday as Tevez is still recovering from a knee injury sustained on international duty with Argentina.

But Ferguson is more pleased that City is denied the services of Emmanuel Adebayor, the forward who has scored in all four league wins but is suspended for three matches after his violent conduct toward former Arsenal teammate Robin van Persie in last Saturdays 4-2 triumph.

I am not bothered whether Tevez plays or not - Manchester Citys best player wont be playing, Ferguson said. Adebayor is their star player, there is no question about that.

Hughes claimed United is suffering without Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo, who switched to Real Madrid in June.

You cant afford to lose players of that standard and not replace them and I dont think they have replaced them, Hughes said. Ive watched a number of their games and I dont think theyre playing as well as they did last season.

While United is bidding for a fourth Premier League title in a row and record 19th crown, City hasnt enjoyed such success since 1968 or even won a trophy since the 1976 League Cup.

Ferguson also tackled City for its tendency to play down title expectations for this season.

When you have spent that kind of money, and the wages they are paying, you have to win the league with that kind of investment, Ferguson. You talk about top fours but to us it has to be number one and that is my aim, that is my challenge and that is what I have to do. At this club we have to be number one.

City isnt the only team with an unbeaten record or a derby on Sunday. Carlo Ancelotti can extend the winning start to his Chelsea reign to six league matches with a victory over Tottenham.

Chelsea, which hasnt won the title since 2006, enjoys a three point lead over United, City and Tottenham at the top of the standings. Tottenhams own unbeaten start ended with a 3-1 loss to Man United last Saturday.

Also Sunday, Everton hosts Blackburn and Fulham travels to Wolverhampton.

On Saturday, Arsenal is looking to recover from its consecutive losses against Man United and City by beating their northwest neighbor Wigan.

Liverpool also cant afford to slip up at West Ham on Saturday with the Reds already six points adrift of Chelsea.

We had put some pressure on ourselves by losing two early matches, but we showed against Burnley (last Saturday) that we are perfectly capable of playing the sort of inventive football that was our trademark last season, Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard said. There is a lot more to come from us this season. We are improving with every game.

Also Saturday: Portsmouth goes in search of its first point at Aston Villa, Bolton takes on Stoke, Burnley hosts Sunderland and Birmingham is at Hull.

Police nab Maradonas earrings to pay tax bill

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Italian police didnt want the shirt off Diego Maradonas back - just his earrings.

Tax authorities visited the Argentina coach at an Alpine resort on Friday and took away a pair of earrings as part payment of the former Napoli stars unpaid tax bill.

The Bolzano Provincial Tax Police said Maradona handed over the pair of earrings, worth $5,900. The Italian news agency ANSA said the tax bill stands at about $54 million.

Tax police in the capital of the South Tyrol declined to describe the earrings taken from the Grand Hotel Palace in Merano. An Italian television network reported that they contained diamonds.

Police did not say whether Maradona was wearing them when it was time to pay up.

Three years ago, tax police took two Rolex watches during his appearance at a news conference and benefit in a Naples suburb.

The 48-year-old Maradona captained Argentina to the 1986 World Cup title, and had some stellar seasons for Napoli from 1984 to 1991. He helped the club win its two Serie A championships, the UEFA Cup and the Italian Cup.

He was kicked out of the 1994 World Cup and banned for 15 months for failing a doping test for stimulants. He was near death on a respirator five years ago after a heart attack attributed to a cocaine overdose.

With two qualifying games remaining next month, Argentina is in danger of missing its first World Cup since 1970, and Maradona is taking much of the blame.

Poland names Majewski interim coach

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Poland has named Stefan Majewski as interim coach for its final two World Cup qualifiers.

The Polish football federation said in a statement on its Web site Thursday that Majewski would take over from Leo Beenhakker, who was fired last week after Poland was left without a chance of qualifying for the World Cup.

Majewski will lead the team in its final two qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and will also be a candidate as a permanent replacement for Beenhakker, the federation said.

Majewski played for the Polish team that finished third at the 1982 World Cup, and has recently worked as the coach of the Polish under-23 national team.
