Anelka reveals physical problems

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka has been hampered by injuries and considered undergoing surgery over the summer.

After struggling in Chelseas opener against Hull before being left on the bench against Sunderland, the France forward scored his first goal this season and set up another for Didier Drogba in the Blues 2-0 victory at Fulham on Sunday.

This is not easy because its been six months that Im having plenty of physical problems, Anelka said Monday in the sports daily LEquipe, adding that he was still weakened by groin pain and played against Fulham with a sore foot.

I even thought about undergoing an operation this summer, Anelka said. We thought I had a sports hernia. But I didnt want it because this is a very important season with a World Cup at the end.

Anelka, who led Premier League strikers last season with 19 goals, said he had a back problem that has since disappeared.

Chelsea is unbeaten this season after three victories in as many Premier League games. Anelka believes the Blues have the potential to win more trophies after the Community Shield triumph on penalties over Manchester United.

We have to wait and see how we compete against big teams, the former Arsenal player said. But for the moment we are in good form and I think we have got a good chance to win something this season.

Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti praised the Anelka and Drogba partnership after Sundays victory.

I am sure they can play together because they are fantastic strikers and have different qualities, Ancelotti said.

Anelka said that he was happy to be on the pitch with the Ivory Coast striker.

When Ive got the ball, I always try to find him and when he has got it, he tries to find me as well, the 30-year-old Anelka said. Its always easier to score when we play for each other.

Under contract with Chelsea until 2011, Anelka said he didnt plan a move to another club.

Im very happy to play and to score for this club, the Frenchman said. I love Chelsea, I love my teammates and I love to play the Champions League. I want to stay here as long as possible.

Anelka joined the Blues in 2008 in a career that has taken him to Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester City, Fenerbahce and Bolton.

Man charged with attacking West Ham star Davenport

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

A 25-year-old man was charged Monday with stabbing West Ham defender Calum Davenport, who remained hospitalized in serious condition with leg wounds.

Davenport and his 49-year-old mother were attacked on Friday night at her home in Bedford, 92 kilometers (57 miles) north of London and the centerback needed emergency surgery. The 26-year-old player was described in serious but stable condition.

Bedfordshire police said Monday that 25-year-old Worrell Whitehurst, from Derby in central England, was charged with grievous bodily harm to Davenport and also assaulting the players mother.

No motive for the attack was given.

Whitehurst was due to appear in court later Monday while a 19-year-old man who was also arrested on Sunday has been released on bail.

Were very sorry about what happened. Its a terrible story, West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola. We cant imagine what (Davenport) has been through. The doctor told me that the situation is stable, he is OK. The situation will be clearer in the next few days. Now its important that hes all right.

Tottenham, Chelsea share Premier League lead

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Tottenham and Chelsea remained neck-and-neck at the top of the Premier League after winning away from home Sunday, Spurs coming from behind to beat West Ham 2-1 and the Blues beating Fulham 2-0.

Although Carlton Cole volleyed West Ham ahead from 25 yards after 49 minutes at Upton Park, Jermain Defoe equalized five minutes later against his former club and Aaron Lennon fired the winner in the 79th.

It was the first time since Spurs last won the league title in 1961 that its won its first three games of the campaign.

Chelsea also has a maximum nine points from three games, but trails Tottenham on goal difference. Nicolas Anelka set up co-striker Didier Drogba for the first score after 39 minutes at Craven Cottage and added the second in the 76th.

Promoted last season in the playoffs, Burnley moved up to seventh and alongside Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Sunderland on six points after beating Everton 1-0 thanks to a 34th minute strike by Wade Elliott. The victory came after the Clarets beat defending champion Man United 1-0.

For Everton, the loss means it slips to last place having been outplayed 6-1 at home by Arsenal on the opening day of the season.

MILAN - Champion Inter Milan was held to a 1-1 draw at home by newly promoted Bari in its first match of the new season on Sunday.

Inters main rivals both won, with Juventus beginning its season with a 1-0 win at home to Chievo Verona thanks to a Vincenzo Iaquinta header, whilst AC Milan won away to Siena on Saturday.

Samuel Etoo opened the scoring for Inter with his first goal for his new side when he slotted home a penalty on 56 minutes, before Vitali Kutuzov equalized with 15 minutes to go.

Jose Mourinhos team was lackluster and struggled to break down an ultra-defensive Bari side.

Mario Balotelli came on midway through the first half to join Etoo and Diego Milito in attack, whilst winger Ricardo Quaresma was brought on at halftime to provide further attacking options.

Despite the changes Inter was unable to create any clear chances.

We knew that the first game is always tough, especially against a newly promoted team, Inter midfielder Thiago Motta said. We knew they would cause us problems and put us under pressure.

In the second half we started well and had a number of chances to score. We messed them up and we missed some good chances.

Genoa beat AS Roma 3-2 in a thrilling match, and in other matches Sunday, it was: Sampdoria 2, Catania 1; Lazio 1, Atalanta 0; Livorno 0, Cagliari 0; Palermo 2, Napoli 1 and Udinese 2, Parma 2.

BERLIN - Hamburger SV ended Wolfsburgs run of 16 straight wins at home and beat the defending champion 4-2 to go into a three-team tie at the top of the Bundesliga.

After falling behind on goals by Paolo Guerrero and Eljero Elia, Wolfsburg battled back with two inside four minutes by Zvjezdan Misimovic and Obafemi Martins. Hamburg struck again with Mladen Petric and Romeo Castelen, and joined Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke at seven points and the lead in the Bundesliga.

In other games Sunday, Werder Bremen beat Borussia Moenchengladbach 3-0, and Bochum earned its first victory of the season by beating Hertha Berlin 1-0.

PARIS - Yoann Gourcuff scored twice as defending champion Bordeaux extended its record winning streak in the French league to 14 games by hammering Nice 4-0.

While Gourcuff took his tally to four in three games, Brazilian winger Jussie and midfielder Alou Diarra got the other goals to maintain a perfect start this season and move to the top with nine points. Bordeaux won the last 11 games of last season to clinch the title on the final day.

GLASGOW, Scotland - Kevin Boyd fired a 90th minute winner from the penalty spot in Rangers 2-1 victory at Hearts in the Scottish Premier League.

Steven Naismith was tripped in the area by Ismael Bouzid and Boyd, who had only been on the field for two minutes for 10-man Rangers, scored from the spot. Rangers Kevin Thomson was sent off after only 14 minutes in his first start since a 9-month injury layoff.

David Witteveen then gave Hearts a 31st minute lead but Lee McCulloch equalized in the 63rd minute. Rangers victory put them level on points with Celtic, which beat St. Johnstone 5-2 on Saturday, and Hibernian, a 3-1 winner at Falkirk.

AMSTERDAM - Jonathan de Guzman scored twice as Feyenoord beat Roda JC 4-0 to join FC Twente at the top of the Dutch league.

Sekou Cisse and Jon Dahl Tomasson also scored for the Rotterdam side which is shares the lead with Twente with 10 points each. Defending champion AZ Alkmaar has nine, PSV Eindhoven eight and Ajax seven.

Messi leads Barcelona to Spanish Supercup win

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Lionel Messi scored two second half goals Sunday as Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao 3-0 to lift the Spanish Supercup.

Substitute Bojan Krkic also scored as the Catalans secured their eighth Supercup 5-1 on aggregate to take the first of six trophies it is competing for following a historic treble-winning campaign last season.

Messi ran onto Zlatan Ibrahimovics pass in the 50th minute, moved around a defender and then chipped goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz for his first goal before scoring a penalty in the 68th.

Krkic rounded out the scoreline just a minute after replacing Ibrahimovic, who made his competitive debut after arriving from Inter Milan. The teenage striker seized on an Athletic turnover in the 72nd to walk the ball into goal.

Barcelona dominated possession just as it did at the San Mames, with Messi and Ibrahimovic beginning to strike up an understanding that coach Pep Guardiola is hoping will lead the Catalans to further glory this season.

We started on the right foot and we need to stay on this track, midfielder Xavi Hernandez said.

The Catalan club is also playing Shakhtar Donetsk for the European Supercup on Friday and will try for the Club World Cup in December.

Goalkeeper Iraizoz kept the Basques in it through the first half with a number of key saves beginning in the 25th minute when Messi let fly with a quick strike from the right side.

Yaya Toure dribbled free along the goal line to find Seydou Keita with a center in the 33rd only for the Mali midfielder to trip over with only Iraizoz to beat.

Soon after denying Gerard Pique, Iraizoz stopped an acrobatic volley from Ibrahimovic after Messi had found the Sweden striker alone in front of goal.

Messi later stepped up to score a penalty after Ustaritz Aldekoaotalora was adjudged to have brought down Daniel Alves inside the box.

Pablo Orbaizs long-range free kick was Athletics sole chance as it came to the Camp Nou stadium trying to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg.

Porto and Benfica pick up first Portuuese wins

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

FC Porto and Benfica both secured their first victories of the Portuguese league season on Sunday.

Second half scores by Radamel Falcao, Rolando and Cristian Rodriguez led four-time defending champion Porto to a 3-0 win over Nacional at the Dragon stadium.

Benfica kept pace with the title favorites with a 1-0 win over Guimaraes thanks to midfielder Ramires Santos 90th-minute winner.

Porto and Benfica both now have four points and trail league leader Braga, whose 2-1 victory at winless Sporting on Saturday gave it a maximum six points from its first two games.

Also on Sunday, Maritimo beat Leixoes 1-0 and Rio Ave was a 1-0 victor over Setubal.

Belenenses plays Naval on Monday to close out the second round of games.

Academica and Pacos Ferreira drew 1-1 on Saturday while Olhanense and Leiria played out a scoreless draw on Friday.

Pato brace gives AC Milan opening win

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Alexandre Pato scored twice to lead AC Milan to a 2-1 victory over Siena on Saturday and give new coach Leonardo a winning start to the Serie A season.

Milan had struggled in the preseason with seven losses in eight games, but Patos goals in the 29th and 48th minutes provided a fairly comfortable win. Abled Ghezzal had equalized for Siena in the 34th.

We have won which is good, because we seemed to have forgotten how to, Pato said. We had a great game and I have to thank my teammates for all the chances they made for me.

The 19-year-old Pato, who scored 15 goals last season, thought he had his first of this campaign with a header in the 22nd minute, but he was offside from Ronaldinhos free kick.

However, he made no mistakes seven minutes later when played through by his fellow Brazilian, lifting the ball over Siena goalkeeper Gianluca Curci.

The lead didnt last long, as Marco Storari could only parry Lukas Jarolims shot and Ghezzal hit home the rebound.

But Pato put Milan back ahead for good after Ronaldinho picked out Mathieu Flamini in the area, who crossed to Pato for an easy tap-in into the unguarded net.

Ronaldinho showed that he wants to fill the big gap left by Kaka and seemed increasingly confident as the match wore on. In the 68th, he forced Curci to push the ball over the bar from an overhead kick, having calmly controlled Marco Borriellos header.

Hes great, one of the best around when he has the ball at his feet, Pato said. Im delighted for him because when he plays like that he makes playing football easy for the rest of us.

In Saturdays other match, Bolognas Paolo Osvaldo scored the first goal of the new season in a 1-1 draw at home against Fiorentina.

The Argentine rose highest in the penalty area in the 24th to head home Giacomo Tedescos corner.

Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino, who scored 19 times last season, had three good chances in the opening period, but Emiliano Viviano was equal to his efforts.

Captain Adrian Mutu came on at halftime and made an immediate impact, firing home Riccardo Montolivios pass from the edge of the area to level the scores.

Fellow substitute Martin Jorgensen went closest to deciding the match, but Francesco Valiani cleared his shot off the line.

We began a bit slowly, Fiorentina coach Cesare Prandelli said. A bit because of the heat and a bit because of Bolognas aggressiveness.

In the second half we dominated, and Im happy with our showing. At the moment our main consideration is to start the season in a good way.
