United unveils trio replacing Ronaldo, Tevez

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Alex Ferguson unveiled the signings he hopes will prove to be another bold masterstroke, but could still turn out to be a gamble too far for the Manchester United manager.

Even while flanked by his new attacking trio Monday of Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia and Gabriel Obertan, Ferguson had to concede that his shopping list was redrawn as Madrid pushed up Europes price tags.

That swiftly ended any interest in Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema for Ferguson, who deflected any concerns about Cristiano Ronaldo joining Real Madrid and Carlos Tevez defecting to Manchester City.

Just a quarter of the 80 million pounds ($131 million) received from Madrid for world player of the year Ronaldo has been spent by Ferguson and will be before January at least.

Tasked with marauding down the Old Trafford turf graced by world player of the year Ronaldo are wingers Obertan - at 20 not yet a full France international - and Valencia, the Ecuadorean whose Premier League experience has been limited to Wigan.

Theyre both very quick and play in wide positions, although they can also play through the middle, the 67-year-old Ferguson said. Players who can play in several positions are invaluable in the modern game.

Ronaldos No. 7 shirt will be occupied by Tevezs replacement Owen. Yet while Tevez is an Argentina regular, the injury-prone Owen has been exiled by England and was struggling to find a club when his Newcastle contract expired. Ferguson, though, believes the 29-year-old Owen is still a potent targetman.

Michael gives us experience in the penalty box, which is vital, Ferguson said. He has always had that little knack of losing defenders in the last third. I know he will score a lot of goals for us. He has been great at that for years.

With no more players arriving before the end of the transfer window in August, Owen will be competing for a starting spot alongside one-time England teammate Wayne Rooney and Bulgaria international Dimitar Berbatov. Teenagers Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck will also be pushing their cases.

It does irritate me that so many people have doubts, but if there is one thing I am angered by, the injury thing would be it, Owen said. There is no doubt I have had injuries in my career. But there is a long list of players that have had a broken metatarsal. I was foolish trying to rush back for the (2006) World Cup and my leg had just come out of plaster.

But I played 33 and 32 games in the last two years in a (Newcastle) team that was not in Europe and did not go on a decent cup run. Still I was continually labeled injury-prone, which gets up my nose. I am 29 and have played over 500 games for club and country. That says it all.

Ferguson monitored Owen during the final year of his contract at Newcastle, knowing the former Liverpool and Real Madrid player could leave St. James Park for nothing at the end of the season. The interest persisted despite Owens side struggling before dropping out of the Premier League in May.

In certain parts, people do have a justification to have a go at me, Owen said. I didnt set the world alight in the last year at Newcastle. That is no ones fault but mine. We were not playing well as a team and I wasnt doing my bit either.

Ferguson has being keeping track of Obertans progress despite the France under-21 winger also struggling with injuries of late.

Weve monitored Gabriel since he was 16 years of age and he was probably the most sought-after youngster in Europe, Ferguson said. His form dipped a little last year, possibly due to an injury, but hes regained that form and was fantastic against England under-21s earlier this year. That reignited our interest in the boy.

The pressure on Obertan and Valencia will be constant comparisons with Ronaldo.

When I had my first conversations with Manchester United it was never said that I was coming here to replace Cristiano, Valencia said. Obviously Cristiano did very well here and hes a good player. But Im here to do my job and to do the things that I do well. Im keen to do well, I have a desire to do well, and I dont really make any comparisons between myself and Cristiano.

J-League side Oita fires manager Chamusca

Oita Trinita of Japans J-League has fired Brazilian manager Pericles Chamusca, the team said Tuesday.

Chamusca, 43, will be replaced by 42-year-old Austrian Ranko Popovic, who previously coached Sanfrecce Hiroshima.

Chamusca was hired by Oita in 2005 and last year guided the team to its first major domestic trophy in the Nabisco Cup final and a fourth-place finish in the top division, but the team has struggled this season and is in last place with just four points from 17 games.

Barcelona eye Villa and Forlan and wait on Etoo

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Barcelona is eyeing Valencias David Villa or Atletico Madrids Diego Forlan regardless of whether Samuel Etoo decides to stay with the Spanish champions.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta said Friday that the club is still waiting for a response from Etoo over a two-year contract extension at his current pay level. Manchester City has also made the Cameroon striker an offer that could reportedly make him one of Europes highest paid players.

Its independent of whether Etoo continues or not, Laporta said. (We) have the intention of strengthening that position and there are players like Villa and Forlan who are very interesting for that spot.

Laporta also said that Barcelona had made an offer to Deportivo La Coruna to buy left back Luis Filipe and that it was waiting for an answer from the Spanish club.

Everton retains Man Citys Jo for next season

Everton signed Brazilian striker Jo on a season-long loan from Manchester City on Friday.

The 22-year-old Jo scored five goals in 13 games after first joining the Toffees on loan in January.

City signed Jo for 18 million pounds (then $36 million) last July from CSKA Moscow, but his future in Manchester was put in further doubt by the arrival of Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn last month.

Also Friday, American midfielder Anton Peterlin received international clearance to complete his move to Everton from an amateur league in the United States.

The 22-year-old Peterlin impressed on a 10-day trial last season at the Liverpool-based club, and can now feature in a preseason friendly against Bury on Saturday.

Peterlin is joining from the Ventura County Fusion in California, a team in the fourth-tier Premier Development League, for a nominal fee on a one-year contract.

Sevilla signs Zokora from Tottenham

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Sevilla has signed Didier Zokora from Tottenham.

The 28-year-old Ivory Coast midfielder agreed to a four-year contract with the Spanish league club, which did not disclose the cost of his transfer.

Zokora was our principal objective for the season, sporting director Ramon Monchi said on Sevillas Web site. Lets hope that is worth the trouble, because we believed the player was worth it.

Zokora played at St. Etienne before moving to White Hart Lane in July 2006, where he went on to make 134 appearances for the English club.

Arsenal ties up Van Persie, rules out big spending

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Arsenal have tied Robin van Persie to a new contract to the Premier League club and rejected fundraising proposals to strengthen the squad with big-money signings.

The 25-year-old Netherlands striker, who was Arsenals top scorer last season with 20 goals in 44 games, has signed a long-term deal, the club said on Wednesday, without giving details.

Retaining talent like Van Persie will be Arsenals priority, with chief executive Ivan Gazidis cautioning Wednesday against buying players in an inflated transfer market to end the clubs four-year trophy drought.

Transfer fees have been swelled by Real Madrids spree of more than ?200 million to secure stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema this offseason.

Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, who is not on Arsenals board despite owning 25 percent of the Gunners, had been willing to underwrite a share issue that would have raised funds to reduce the debt and add to the transfer budget.

But Gazidis said the policy of self-financing - reaffirmed by the board - was very efficient.

We can comfortably afford to meet the annual costs of this debt while at the same time generating surplus funds to invest in the club, Gazidis said. Using permanent capital to pay down debt would not, therefore, radically transform the annual cash flow of the club.

With regard to players, the board decided not to issue permanent capital in the hopes of signing one or two players in an inflated transfer market. Instead, the focus continues to be on securing the services of talented young players we have on long-term contracts and making very selective acquisitions, only where a new signing will add real value to our already strong squad.

Arsenal borrowed heavily to build its Emirates Stadium and its debt soared last year by almost 20 percent to 318.1 million pounds (then $757 million).

However, the Londoners still paid a club-record 15 million pounds (then $21million) to capture Russia playmaker Andrei Arshavin in February. The only signing so far ahead of the new season has been Belgium defender Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax in a deal worth around 10 million pounds.

Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, defender Kieran Gibbs, midfielders Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere, and winger Theo Walcott have meanwhile committed their futures to Arsenal, which has not won the Premier League since the unbeaten 2004 season, and Van Persie now joins that list.

Van Persie, who joined in 2004 from his hometown club Feyenoord, told the clubs Web site: My heart is with Arsenal and I just cant picture myself in a different shirt. I just cant see it now because I love this club so much.

With Arsenal finishing fourth last season and without a title since the FA Cup in 2005, manager Arsene Wenger has been under increasing pressure from fans to buy more experienced players and put less emphasis on his philosophy of developing young talent.

But Gazidis strongly defended the approach taken by Wenger, who recently made it clear he had no interest in joining a big-spending club like Real Madrid.

Simply spending money in the transfer market does not make a team or guarantee success, Gazidis said. There is a football graveyard of clubs that have not adhered to these principles and have unfortunately suffered the consequences.

Our responsibility is to build the club so that it can be successful, not just this season and next season, but also 10 and even 20 years from now.

American businessman Stan Kroenke became Arsenals biggest shareholder in May by increasing his stake in the club to 28.3 percent, putting him in a stronger position to mount a takeover.

United finalizes Obertan move as Foster commits

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Manchester United was finalizing the signing of Bordeaux winger Gabriel Obertan on Tuesday as England goalkeeper Ben Foster committed his future to the Premier League champions by agreeing an improved four-year deal.

The 20-year-old Obertan underwent a medical examination as he moved closer to signing a four-year contract for a reported 3 million pounds ($4.9 million).

We have agreed on the player, Bordeaux president Jean-Louis Triaud told The Associated Press. It will be decided (either way) in the next 48 hours. We have agreed with the club, Bordeaux has agreed with Manchester, but there is still the medical test to pass.

Bordeaux sent the France under-21 player on loan to Lorient for the second half of last season. He made 15 appearances, scoring one goal.

Adept on either the right or left wing, Obertan will give manager Alex Ferguson another option as he tries to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, the world player of the year who was unveiled by Real Madrid on Monday after his world-record transfer. United has already signed 23-year-old Ecuador winger Antonio Valencia.

Ferguson has also been focusing on the goalkeeping position. Foster, who had been considering whether to leave Old Trafford due to his lack of first-team opportunities, is now contracted to the club until 2013 after agreeing a new contract.

Im really happy to commit my future to the club, Foster said. The team spirit here is fantastic.

Foster has been given assurances that he will eventually replace 38-year-old first-choice goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, who set a British record of 14 consecutive matches without conceding last season.

The 26-year-old Foster has struggled with a string of injuries since joining the Premier League champions in 2005, limiting him to 10 appearances and making it tough dislodging first-choice goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

Foster has acknowledged that he must establish himself in Uniteds first team if he is to be part of the England squad at the 2010 World Cup. He made his second international appearance against Slovakia in March after a two-year wait.

Ben is seen as one of the best young goalkeepers in England and we genuinely see him as a successor to Edwin Van Der Sar, United manager Alex Ferguson said Tuesday.

Foster was Uniteds penalty shootout hero in the League Cup final victory over Tottenham in March.
