Arsenal beats Hull 2-1 to reach FA Cup semifinals

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

William Gallas disputed goal five minutes from time lifted Arsenal past Hull 2-1 and into the FA Cup semifinals on Tuesday.

Arsenal will meet Chelsea in a semifinal on April 18, the first time the Gunners will play at the rebuilt Wembley.

Hull stunned Arsenal at Emirates Stadium in the 13th minute when defender Andy Dawsons lofted pass found Nick Barmby in the area and his shot deflected off Arsenal defender Johan Djourou and looped in over goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

The equalizer didnt arrive until the 75th, after a pass by Nicklas Bendtner in front of goal was deflected into the path of Andrei Arshavin who set up Robin van Persie for an easy tap-in.

Then Gallas, who was stripped of the captaincy earlier in the season for criticizing his teammates, scored the winner.

Hull goalkeeper Boaz Myhill came off his line to punch a long ball clear but it came off Djourou and Gallas won a duel with Dawson to head the ball into an empty net. But Gallas appeared to be in an offside position, according to television replays.

A furious Hull manager Phil Brown blamed referee Mike Riley and his linesman for the loss.

You can talk all about Arsenals passing as much as you want, but coming in at halftime I felt as if we deserved to be in front, Brown said. There was no excuse for the first goal, it was a mistake by us. No excuse for the second goal, it was definitely a mistake by the officials. Thats why were out of the FA Cup. Ask Mr. Riley how much thats going to cost Hull City. I dont think hed understand, I dont think hed care.

Brown said he could not use the word cheat, but thanked journalists for asking a question about whether he felt that way.

You used the word. I cant use that word Im afraid, but that is the case, Brown said. I didnt mention the word cheat. You did.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger denied that Gallas was offside.

The ball was deflected by the fist of the goalkeeper, consequently the ball comes from an opponent and its a normal goal, Wenger said. It hit Djourou first, the goalkeeper after, and then it was a foul on Gallas. Penalty. In fact, we should have got two goals.

Brown also accused injured Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas of spitting at the feet of Hulls assistant manager after the match in the tunnel. Wenger said he didnt see the incident.

The FA Cup win in 2005 over Manchester United was Arsenals last trophy and Wenger has been under increasing pressure from fans to win silverware this season.

Many believe the FA Cup represents Arsenals best chance, because the team has struggled in the Premier League and narrowly advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals in a penalty shootout against AS Roma last week.

Arsenal has lifted the FA Cup 10 times, only one less than the record held by United, which faces Everton in the other semifinal on April 19.

Hulls goal was only the second conceded by Arsenal in the FA Cup this season - the other was in the Gunners 3-1 victory over Plymouth on Jan. 3. The Gunners went on to beat Cardiff 4-0 and Burnley 3-0 to set up the quarterfinal against Hull.

Hull continued to threaten throughout the first half and the scoreline could have easily grown in its favor. Gallas was cautioned for a tackle on Hull striker Peter Halmosi in the 23rd, setting up a free kick that midfielder Geovanni nearly converted with a curving shot that was tipped out by Fabianski for a corner.

A minute later, Barmby was unmarked and his shot found the back of the net, but his effort was canceled for being offside.

Arsenal had several chances to equalize in the first half, mainly through Arshavin. In the 31st, the Russian playmakers shot was palmed away by Myhill. Ten minutes later, Arshavin was alone in front of goal, but Hull defender Samuel Ricketts lunged in just in time to block his shot. In stoppage time, Arshavin blasted the ball across the face of the goal but it swerved just wide.

Arsenal came out stronger in the second half and dominated possession in the opening stages. Arsenals command nearly paid off on several occasions but the Gunners could manage only a few close misses as the half wore on. The referee cautioned Myhill in the second half for time wasting.

Arsene Wenger got my goalkeeper booked, Brown said. You call that good management? He was complaining about time-wasting … Our game plan was working until our goalkeeper got booked. Our game plan wasnt to time-waste.

Van Persies free kick was on target but Myhill was able to push the ball out for a corner. Two minutes later, the Dutch internationals header hit the crossbar off a corner.

Hull was very close to repeating another shock victory over Arsenal this season. Geovanni and Daniel Cousin scored in Hulls 2-1 win over Arsenal in the English Premier League on Sept. 27 - only the second time the Gunners had been beaten at Emirates Stadium since it opened in 2006.

Brown can now focus on avoiding relegation in the Premier League.

Scott leaves WTA to become Pac-10 commissioner

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Tennis news

Larry Scott will become the Pac-10 Conference commissioner on July 1 after six years as chairman and chief executive officer of the WTA Tour.

Scott will remain with the womens professional tennis circuit into June, the tour said Tuesday. He will work with the tour board to select his successor.

It was not an easy decision. Ive been in tennis my whole life, Scott said in a telephone interview Tuesday night. I realized after 20 years that I maybe had done the most I could do in this sport.

He became the CEO of the WTA in 2003, after having been ATP chief operating officer and president of ATP Properties. Under his watch, the WTA pushed for - and got - equal prize money for women at Wimbledon and the French Open.

Despite all the financial success and commercial success, by far the achievement Im most proud of is equal prize money, Scott said.

His biggest disappointment as he prepares to leave?

I regret that I couldnt convince the mens tour that a merger with the womens tour would make sense by making tennis a bigger, stronger enterprise, Scott said.

He said he was first approached about the Pac-10 job in January.

He brings a lot of great skills and experience to the job, said Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby, who led the Pac-10s search and screening committee.

He has great experience in branding. He has great experience in sponsorship development and in television negotiations, Bowlsby said in a telephone interview. He has the right energy to build upon a great foundation with the Pac-10.

Scott will take over for Tom Hansen, who announced his retirement last June after 26 years, making him the longest-tenured Division I conference commissioner in the country.

Bowlsby said his committee began work last August and forwarded the names of four candidates to the conference presidents.

The Pac-10s member schools are craving different, more media exposure, more commercial success where its possible, innovative and different ways to promote the conference - all things I feel Ive done before, Scott said.

Scotts announcement that he is leaving the tour comes a little more than a month after perhaps the biggest controversy of his stay: Israeli tennis player Shahar Peer was denied a visa by the United Arab Emirates and wasnt able to compete in the Dubai Tennis Championships.

The WTA eventually fined the tournaments organizers a record $300,000 and made them post a $2 million performance guarantee to ensure Peer and other Israeli players wont be shut out of future tournaments in the UAE.

Under Scott, according the tour, it has seen a 500 percent increase in sponsorship revenue, a 250 percent increase in overall revenues, a 40 percent increase in prize money and $710 million in new stadium investments.

He helped the tour land the largest sponsorship deal in the history of womens sports with Sony Ericsson at $88 million over six years. The announcement of his resignation came on the eve of the start of the Sony Ericsson Open on Key Biscayne.

Under Larrys leadership, the tour and our sport have grown over the past six years beyond anyones wildest expectations, said Steve Simon, tournament board representative and chairman of the tournament council.

Scott helped the tour change its calendar and rules to shorten the season and lessen the strain on players, and it landed the largest deal for the year-end championships, putting them in Doha, Qatar, for 2008-10.

Innovations under Scott included electronic line-calling, on-court coaching, pre-match player interviews and a new doubles scoring format.

Federer eager to get on a roll at Key Biscayne

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Tennis news

Roger Federers slip from supremacy extends beyond Grand Slam events, as his recent record at Key Biscayne suggests.

Federer hasnt reached the semifinals since 2006, and for the first time in five years hes not seeded No. 1 for the Sony Ericsson Open beginning on Wednesday. Nemesis Rafael Nadal is top-seeded, and five-time champion Serena Williams is No. 1 on the womens side.

The focus in recent months has been on Federers decline in major events, but the slippage has been even more pronounced in Masters tournaments - the ATP Tours most prestigious and lucrative events aside from the Grand Slams.

Federer won his most recent Masters title at Cincinnati in August 2007.

I hope this year I can change that a bit and get on a good roll again, because Ive done so well over the last few years that Id like to win a few again, Federer said.

His 14 Masters titles rank second only to Andre Agassis 17, while Nadal has 13. But Federer has come up short at 12 Masters tournaments in a row, losing three finals, including two against Nadal.

Federers most recent Masters setback was last week at Indian Wells. Returning from a six-week layoff due to a back injury, he reached the semifinals before losing to Andy Murray.

Youre just like disappointed a bit, but it was a decent tournament, Federer said. Not the greatest of all time, but it was all right. Hopefully Ill play well in Miami.

Nadal is seeking his first Key Biscayne title. He ended Federers 4 1/2-year reign atop the rankings last August and won his latest title on Sunday at Indian Wells, then was on a plane that night to Miami.

The good thing of tennis is when you lose you have another chance next week, Nadal said. The bad thing is when you win, most of the time you dont have enough time to enjoy the victories.

Nadal actually has a few days this week to savor the achievement. Seeded players at Key Biscayne receive first-round byes, and the Spaniard will play his opening match late Saturday.

Federer is seeded second, and 2007 champion Novak Djokovic is third. Seeded fourth is the improving Murray, who has beaten Federer four times in a row. Andy Roddick is fifth.

Federer, Djokovic and Roddick are in the same half of the draw. The only top player missing from the 96-man field is defending champion Nikolay Davydenko, sidelined by a foot infection.

The only top woman absent will be Maria Sharapova, whose ranking has slipped to No. 30 as she recovers from shoulder surgery last autumn.

Williams seeks her third consecutive Key Biscayne championship. Last year, when she tied Steffi Grafs record of five titles in the event, Williams dubbed it The Serena and Steffi Open.

Three-time champion Venus Williams is seeded fifth and could meet her younger sister in the semifinals. Dinara Safina is seeded second and Jelena Jankovic third, with the top 10 women all competing.

Federer won Key Biscayne in 2005 and 2006, when he was winning almost everything, but he played a dismal third set in the quarterfinals last year and lost to Roddick. The defeat was part of a yearlong slump for Federer interrupted only when he won the U.S. Open for his 13th Grand Slam title, one shy of Pete Sampras record.

Federer has lost five consecutive matches against Nadal, most recently last month in the Australian Open final. While Nadals lead in the rankings is widening, Federer still considers the gap small.

I dont know if I really have to like make a major jump, Federer said. With Rafa the last few matches, for instance, it has been down to a few points here and there. That makes a difference of winning a Slam or not winning a Slam. So I think I just have to make sure next time I play him I get those couple of points.

The latest loss against Nadal left Federer sobbing during the trophy ceremony. Federer later said he was embarrassed because the tears were misinterpreted.

It had nothing to do with, Oh my God, Im never going to win this tournament again, he said. We care about this game and try hard. When it doesnt happen, you know, were not happy, were sad. …

Instead of getting it out maybe in the locker room, it happened in the center court in front of anybody. Thats the tough part for me to handle. But I could handle it, and I still believe it shows that there is a human side to any player.

Clijsters to announce plans amid comeback rumors

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Tennis news

Former top-ranked Kim Clijsters will hold a news conference Thursday amid reports she is planning a return to the WTA Tour.

The 25-year-old Belgian, who retired two years ago, will unveil her plans for 2009 at the tennis center where she has been recently training.

At this time, Kim has not contacted the Tour regarding entry into Tour events, WTA spokesman Andrew Walker wrote in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

The Het Belang van Limburg regional newspaper said she was set to enter top-level tournaments. The VTM television network said she may target the U.S. Open, where she won her only Grand Slam title in 2005, as the highlight of her season.

A spokeswoman for Clijsters did not return phone calls.

Though she no longer has a WTA ranking, Clijsters could receive wild cards for any tournament she wants to enter.

Clijsters retired from the WTA Tour in May 2007. She married pro basketball player Brian Lynch and gave birth to a daughter, Jada, in February 2008.

Fellow Belgian star Justine Henin retired last year while still ranked No. 1.

In her last competitive match two years ago, Clijsters lost in the Antwerp Diamond Games final to Frances Amelie Mauresmo before a capacity crowd of 14,500 at the Sport Palace.

Clijsters recently announced she would play Steffi Graf on May 17 as part of a series of exhibition matches at Wimbledon to test conditions under the new retractable roof on Centre Court.

She is also scheduled to play an exhibition June 14 at the Ordina Open in Rosmalen against Michaella Krajicek, plus two matches for the St. Louis Aces in the World Team Tennis league in July.

Clijsters reached four Grand Slam finals and won 34 singles titles overall. She won two Grand Slam doubles titles and held the No. 1 ranking for 19 weeks.

Kewell recalled for World Cup qualifier

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Former Liverpool winger Harry Kewell has been recalled to the Australian squad for the April 1 World Cup qualifier against Uzbekistan.

Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek announced a 22-man squad Wednesday for the Sydney match, including Galatasaray forward Kewell along with Everton midfielder Tim Cahill and West Ham defender Lucas Neill in his strongest available squad.

Australia leads Group A with 10 points from three wins and a draw halfway through the last full round of Asian qualifying. The Socceroos are two points clear of second place Japan and six clear of Bahrain and Qatar. Uzbekistan has just one point from a draw and three losses, including a home defeat to Australia.

A win against Uzbekistan would put Australia well on the way to securing one of the top two spots in the Group and automatic qualifying for South Africa 2010. The top two teams in Group B will also qualify directly.

Kewell missed the scoreless draw with leading group rival Japan at Yokohama in February due to injury. Vince Grella and former Glasgow Rangers and Newcastle United defender Craig Moore were not considered for the Uzbekistan match due to injuries.

Uzbekistan will play Qatar at Tashkent and Japan will host Bahrain at Saitama on March 28.

Australia: Michael Beauchamp (Aalborg, Denmark), Mark Bresciano (Palermo, Italy), Jacob Burns (SC Unirea Valahorun, Romania), Tim Cahill (Everton), David Carney (Norwich, England), Scott Chipperfield (FC Basel, Switzerland), Chris Coyne (Colchester, England), Jason Culina (PSV Eindhoven, Holland), Adam Federici (Reading, England), Richard Garcia, (Hull City, England), Brett Holman (AZ Alkmaar, Holland), Mile Jedinak (Genclerbirligi, Turkey), Josh Kennedy (Karlsruhe, Germany), Harry Kewell (Galatasaray, Turkey), Scott McDonald (Celtic, Scotland), Lucas Neill (West Ham, England), Jade North (Incheon United, Korea), Michael Petkovic (Sizasspor, Turkey), Mark Schwarzer (Fulham, England), Mile Sterjovski (Derby, England), Carl Valeri (US Grosseto, Italy), Luke Wilkshire (Dynamo Moscow, Russia).

Hoffenheim loses 2 more players to injuries

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Hoffenheim, already missing several key players, has lost two more to knee injuries.

Defender Matthias Jaissle tore a ligament in his left knee and is out for the season, while defender Andreas Ibertsberger also hurt his knee and will be out for at least four weeks.

Hoffenheim, promoted at the start of the season, led the Bundesliga at the halfway mark and has been one of the success stories this season. But the team has been decimated by injuries and has not won in seven games.

The latest two injuries came in Saturdays 2-2 draw with Hannover, Hoffenheims fifth draw.

It played without forward Vedad Ibisevic, Chinedu Obasi, Sejad Salihovic and Demba Ba. Ibisevic, who led the league with 18 goals, is also out for the season.

Hoffenheim is now in fifth place, five points behind leader Hertha Berlin.

Austrias Janko to miss Romania match

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Striker Marc Janko will miss Austrias World Cup qualifying match against Romania on April 1 because of exhaustion.

The 25-year-old Red Bull Salzburg striker scored his 33rd goal of the season against Austria Vienna on Sunday but was substituted in the second half after complaining about dizziness.

Janko suffers from a persistent cold and has been taking antibiotics over the last couple of days, the Austrian football federation said in a statement. He is physically extremely exhausted. To avoid medical risks, he wont play for the national team.

Austria coach Dietmar Constantini, who took over from Karel Bruckner earlier this month, called up Austria Vienna forward Rubin Okotie as a replacement.

Constantini also added Rapid Vienna defender Andreas Dober to his 23-man squad after Hoffenheims Andreas Ibertsberger tore ligaments in his right knee Saturday and was ruled out for at least six weeks.

Austria has four points from as many games in World Cup qualifying Group 7 and is almost certain to miss out on next years tournament in South Africa. It plays Romania at the Woerthersee Arena in Klagenfurt.
