Why did gambling on his own team get Pete Rose in trouble
I could understand the problem if he bet AGAINST his own team, because that would be a conflict of interest. But I just don’t see the problem in what he actually did.
I still don’t understand. Of COURSE he can influence the outcome, but presumably any manager is trying to win even if he isn’t betting. Any manager who isn’t trying to "stack the deck" in his team’s favor is not doing his job.
So I don’t see how making bets on his team would influence his actions during the game one way or the other.
its not who he bet on it was the fact that he bet on baseball
Have you considered the fact that he could stack the deck since he was the manager of the team? It’s a conflict of interest when you bet on your own team since you can influence the outcome of any game.
Pete Rose bet on his own games, games as a player or manager he could influence the outcome of.
It is not know if he bet to win or lose when he bet on his own games.
Players are on a CONTRACT. they have agreements. one of those is playing to the best of ones abilities or full potential. Betting on games voids that because a player can change his performance for a more favorable outcome, which contradicts the contract.
Second, baseball is a game of a respect. or it was supposed to be at least. You may not care, but for us REAL players it is extremely degrading and embarrassing
It is naive to assume that Rose never bet against his team. If he had a lot of money on a game or a series for the Reds to lose, he wouldn’t be doing his job correctly. The fact that he put himself above the game ALONE gets him the ban, and the fact that he broke the one and only ban rule suggests that his character wasn’t so pure that he would not bet against his own team.
He probably bet as a player, too. It’s hard to imagine that once he was named manager he decided it would be fun to break the rules.
Your point of view assumes too much not in evidence.
